Flat tyre on the road: what to do first

Safety first. The tyre can wait.

Car with a flat rear tyre stopped on a motorway hard shoulder with hazard lights on

1. Get somewhere safe

If anyone is hurt or in danger, call 112 first. Then pull in as far from traffic as you can and switch on the hazard lights. On a motorway, stop on the hard shoulder, leave the car by the passenger side and stand well back behind the barrier.

2. Do not change the wheel next to fast traffic

Changing a wheel on a hard shoulder is risky. If the car is in a safe place, such as a car park or your driveway, it can wait for a mobile tyre fitter.

3. Gather the details

  • Exact location: road, junction, landmark or Eircode
  • Vehicle make and model
  • Tyre size from the sidewall, only if safe to read
  • What happened: nail, blowout, kerb strike

4. Ask for an emergency tyre replacement

Call us with those details. We tell you what we can arrange for your location and agree the price before anyone sets off. Some punctures can be repaired, see puncture repair checks.
